Recently selected as one of the top 8 finalists in the world for the MTV RE: DEFINE Award, Dayeon Kim’s work has an eerie disturbing quality which blurs the lines between fiction and reality, between humor and horror. Originally from South Korea, Kim graduated from Incheon Art High School and obtained a BFA at Sungshin Women’s University in 2014 where she studied a broad range of creative mediums including: painting, drawing, sculpture, and performance. All of her work provokes a new sense of awareness and questions authenticity and the limitations of established social structures. Her work reflects a subtle sense of anxiety, where she turns the world upside down twisting what’s familiar into a web of ironic, disturbing and amusing emotions, inviting people into her world.
Kim has broadened her art practice to encompass live action, fortifying her voice and place within the international performance art scene. Her live works condense human experience and establishes a framework where both the artist and spectator can be entirely present during the action.
She has exhibited several group shows in NYC and Korea, presented performances at: Brooklyn International Performance Art Festival, New York, Gwangju International Performance Art Festival, Korea, OPEN SPACE “Survival” Festival Berlin, Gallery Stiftelsen 3,14 Bergen, Norway, L´MONO Bilbao, Spain, Platform Vaasa, Finland, Livery Gallery, Marseilles, France.
